Guidance and Support Services

School Counselor

Counseling at Lakeview Academy focuses on the social and emotional health of students. If a student is struggling in these areas, it can impact their progress and school experience. Our school counselor works directly and indirectly with students to provide support in these crucial areas. Services can include individual or small group sessions, consultations with parents and faculty, peer facilitation, agency referrals, and crisis intervention. Please note, this is not the same as College Counseling which can be found — here.

Referrals to the school counselor can be made by parents, teachers, administrators, or students may self-refer themselves.

FAQs

List of 3 frequently asked questions.

  • Why would a student need to see the counselor?

Students see the counselor for a variety of reasons. Some students are referred by teachers to discuss classroom behavior strategies or because they are having difficulty with peer interactions. Some students are referred by their parents due to difficulties they are experiencing at home that may be impacting the school day. Often students self-refer to the counselor for difficulties they may be having. If you are wondering whether your child may benefit from seeing the counselor, contact your child’s division director or email Lakeview’s school counselor, Stephanie Hager at stephanie.hager@lakeviewacademy.org
  • Are counseling sessions confidential?

Counseling sessions are confidential. However, it is sometimes necessary for the counselor to share educationally relevant information with teachers and staff at Lakeview Academy. Only information that is relevant to enhancing the student’s educational functioning and well-being will be shared. Lakeview administrators will also be notified when an outside referral is recommended. No information will be shared outside Lakeview Academy without a written release of information.

There are exceptions to confidentiality, including the following:
    1. The School Counselor is obligated by law to report suspected child abuse (sexual, physical, or emotional) and neglect to the proper authorities.
    2. The School Counselor is obligated by law to take appropriate action if a student represents a threat to themself or others, and we will take any necessary actions to prevent such harm from occurring.
  • How many times may my child see the counselor?

The policy at Lakeview is that a student may see the school counselor up to three (3) times. If further counseling is needed, the student would be referred to outside resources and the school counselor would collaborate with those resources to ensure the student’s needs are met.
