The Weather

The British are obsessed with the weather. I know I am. According to a BBC report in December 2015, more than 94% of Brits have talked about the weather in the last six hours, and 38% in the past 60 minutes.
Last week’s storm certainly gave all of us something to talk about. I was fortunate in that I only lost power for 8 hours, but no damage resulted; for many Lakeview families, it was several days, and several trees down. In the age of COVID, I never imagined that a weather event would close Lakeview.
Nevertheless, close it did, for two days. Some of us stayed at home, clearing debris, and trying to text/email staff, faculty and students before our phone batteries died. Others came to the school, to check in, clear up and prepare. The show must (had to) go on, and after 48 hours with no power, the Lakeview Community came together in two glorious venues – on the...
... football field and on the stage. Even though Friday night was a wee bit nippy (or “parky” as we would also say across the pond), students in athletics and the fine arts gave it their all. They should be rightly proud of their hard work and sheer grit, and their efforts are to be applauded. Lakeview students, faculty and staff have shown repeatedly over the last few months that they are resilient, that they will continue on in spite of the ‘new normal.” Even a small weather event (a Hurricane) did not stand in the way. As a Brit, who apparently will spend the equivalent of four and a half months of her life talking about the weather, it was a change to have something to talk about other than COVID or Brexit. But as Head of School at Lakeview Academy, I’m grateful to be a part of the school, energized by the dedication of the students, faculty and staff, and proud to be a Lion.
