Memories of 2020
Last Friday I took half an hour out of the day to walk around the athletic track at Lakeview's new stadium. I needed to clear my head - it had been a hectic week, culminating with the decision to close the Upper School due to the insurmountable challenges of COVID-19. The weather was beautiful and the field deserted; I quickly became lost in my thoughts as I listened to Radiohead and gazed at the mountains in the distance. A lot has happened in the year since I visited Lakeview and accepted the position as its new Head of School. For starters, I don't remember being asked at the interview, "If there is a global pandemic, what is your plan to keep the school open and fund the purchase of PPE?" No one could have predicted that my first semester on the job would be so "interesting," and for sure there's never been a dull day!
While I was walking around the track, I was reminded...
...of the football games ("it's the money down"), the MACABaREt performance, the cheerleaders ("S.U.P.E.R. Super We Are!"), socially-distanced lunchtimes, and the Senior Games. As I rounded the corner on the track, I looked up to the playing field and noticed some Lower School students coming toward the fence. What a joy those students have been over the past few months, even during the most difficult times. I am so hono(u)red to be called "Dr. Gommry" by the pre-K children (they have my permission to call me that right up until they graduate from Lakeview).
After the first lap I realized that in just six months at Lakeview I have things that are more powerful than any complaining email or a gruff phone call that I may receive. I have memories. Even though we are ready to say goodbye to 2020, there has been much to remember, in a good way. I will hang onto that, and hope that you will too, as we start afresh in 2021.
