It's Great to be Back!

"It's great to be back!" - Enthusiastic words uttered by a couple of upper school seniors that I passed this morning, who were beaming from ear to ear (albeit under their masks). I believe them. Four weeks during the winter months is a long time to go without seeing many of your friends. The faculty and staff have missed the students too, especially the usual suspects in the hallways that brighten our days and remind us why we are here. I am proud of the fact that we are here, safely educating our children in person, and while the threat of disruption still looms, I feel confident that we can weather the storm until the COVID vaccine has been widely administered.

My 83-year-old father in England has received the Pfizer vaccine, and my brothers and I monitored dad over Christmas, making sure that he did not grow an extra arm or leg. So far, so good. As a child, my father lived through the Blitz in London and had to...
...carry a mask to school every day to protect him from gas bombs. His gas mask didn't have a lion embroidered on the fabric, rather it was made of heavy black rubber, which was hot and smelly. My father speaks of constant disruption during those years. Nevertheless, he also speaks fondly of his time at school during WWII, most importantly, because it set him up for life as a learner, perpetually curious of the world and everything in it. And my goodness, is he curious and boy, does he ask a lot of questions, even to this day!

I hope that even during this period of disruption that we are all experiencing— and the inevitable feelings of uncertainty —that we can create a generation of lifelong learners, students who are passionate about school, intellectually curious, and look back fondly on their time at Lakeview. Enthusiasm certainly helps.
