We Are One Lakeview Family

Last week was a tough week, as graduate Jordan Thomas, '20 passed away following a car accident in southern Georgia. There are no words that can express the love that Lakeview staff, students, and faculty have for Jordan, and there was such an outpouring of grief that it is impossible to do it justice in this short blog of 250 words. One word sums it up though—family.

Family can mean biological relatives and/or one's ancestors. But, more importantly, it can also mean a group of people that have each other's back, who are loyal, selfless, and have a genuine care and concern for others. The word "family" is in Lakeview's mission statement, and "family" was on display last week as the community came to terms with the tragic loss of one of its own.

There were many acts of kindness, big and small. Students created a memorial to Jordan on the...

...football field, and a couple of hundred people gathered at Monday night's vigil, led by Assistant Head of School John Simpson, to grieve, and to show their unwavering support of the Thomas family. Lakeview graduates, several of whom had driven up from Georgia Southern, mourned alongside new members of the Lakeview community, who had never had the privilege of meeting Jordan. One senior said to me, profoundly, "This is Lakeview, this is why I am here, we are a family." We are a family. We come from different places, have different interests, play different sports, and speak differently (well, I do). But we are united as a school community, united in our grief, and united in our prayers for Jordan and his family. We are one Lakeview family.
