Lakeview junior advances to world's robotics competition

Lakeview junior, Henry Stewart, was named a Dean’s List Finalist at the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Georgia Championship recently held at the Gainesville Civic Center. Henry was one of only three finalists from Georgia and 165 from North America. He will represent Georgia at the FIRST Tech Challenge World Championships, which will take place April 20-23, 2022, in Houston, TX.
“I am very excited to go to Houston to represent Georgia at the world competition,” said Stewart. “It’s a big deal as it is the final competition for FTC. “

Stewart is a second-year member of Lakeview’s FTC Team 5898. The team was one of only 31 that advanced from regional competition to the Georgia State Championship. Stewart was interviewed virtually by the FTC judges following the region match, and the three finalists were announced at the end of the FTC Georgia Championship.

The FIRST Tech Challenge Dean’s List Award is designed to recognize the leadership and dedication of FIRST’s most outstanding FIRST Tech Challenge students. “I enjoy working together as a team with my friends for one big project, especially the engineering side of things,” Stewart commented. The students who earn FIRST Dean’s List Award status as a finalist are great examples of student leaders who have led their teams and communities to increased awareness for STEAM, FIRST and its mission. These students have also achieved personal technical expertise and accomplishment in their communities.

Each team can nominate one or two students for this award. Stewart was nominated by Lakeview’s varsity robotics coach and technology director, Mikhail Lovell. “We nominated him for this prestigious award because he is dedicated to his team, he welcomes everyone’s ideas and makes sure they are heard, and he is always kind, cooperative and willing to share a helping hand,” said Lovell. “Henry leads most often by example by being the person in the room to always be doing what they should be doing.”

The award is open to current FTC participants who are sophomores or juniors and there are three levels of achievement: semi-finalist, finalist, and winner. There were 30,000 to 35,000 eligible FTC participants from which the finalists were chosen. From that group, ten winners will be chosen.
