P.E. Students Challenged by Wheelchair Basketball

Lakeview Academy students experienced the challenge of playing basketball while seated in a wheelchair at a demonstration put on by BlazeSports America out of Atlanta.

Sixth grader John Grimsley, who is a BlazeSports athlete and team member, demonstrated the strength and coordination wheelchair basketball requires.  Many of John’s classmates were rubbing their hands and sweating after a few minutes of play.

John and his parents, Don and Mary Grimsley of Gainesville, are in Atlanta every weekend for team practices and travel throughout the southeast for tournaments.

BlazeSports is a carryover from the 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Games.  The nonprofit’s mission is to change the lives of youth and veterans with disabilities through adaptive sports and recreation.

BlazeSports serves youth, veterans, and active military with disabilities including spina bifida, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, dwarfism, amputations, and visual impairments, as well as veterans with PTSD and PTS.

John, who was born with spina bifida, is in his first year at Lakeview.

“This demonstration today is one of those ‘special’ things that Lakeview does differently,” said Hannah Clay, middle school P.E. teacher. “I’m super excited about this opportunity for our students.”
