Lakeview EDGE Program Connects Students with Real-World Career Experiences and Networking
Lakeview Academy students took meaningful steps toward their futures this week through Lakeview EDGE, the school’s signature program designed to help students explore career pathways, build leadership and communication skills, and connect with community professionals. Through experiences such as guest speakers, job shadowing, and targeted skill development, Lakeview EDGE bridges the gap between classroom learning and real-world experience—helping students make more informed decisions about their academic and career goals.
On Wednesday, March 11, students in 8th through 12th grade participated in hands-on career exploration opportunities across the Gainesville community. Throughout the day, students rotated through small group sessions with professionals, gaining firsthand insight into a variety of industries and the skills required to succeed in them.
Several local business leaders hosted students and shared their professional experiences. At Dress Up, CEO Derrick Case discussed the rewards and challenges of launching a startup business and the path that led him to entrepreneurship. At United Community Bank, Dawn Justus, Vice President and Commercial Relationship Manager, explained the many roles within the banking industry and the safeguards used to protect customers’ assets. Jonathan Collins of Capstone Property Group welcomed students to The National, where he introduced them to the world of commercial real estate, market demand, and how companies determine where to invest and build.
Students also learned about careers in the legal and construction industries. Hall County Court Judge Patty Laine explored the various career paths for attorneys both within the court system and beyond. Shane McClellon of Carroll Daniel shared insight into the many roles within a construction company and the education and work experience needed to succeed in the industry. Lunch on the Gainesville Square provided an opportunity for students to experience the local hospitality environment while continuing conversations about careers and community connections.
In addition to career exploration, students received practical guidance to prepare them for the future. Sessions throughout the day focused on career readiness skills, including preparing for in-person and virtual job and college interviews, writing professional emails, and understanding the importance of maintaining a positive digital presence on social media.
At the same time, Lakeview juniors and seniors participated in the Lakeview EDGE Shadowing Experience, spending the day alongside professionals in career fields that interest them. Through partnerships with local businesses—or independently arranged placements—students experienced a day in the life of professionals and gained valuable perspective on workplace expectations and career pathways. Students shadowed professionals in industries such as information technology, medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, restaurants, law, banking, education, automotive, utilities, and construction.
Earlier this year, during the fall Career Engagement Event, sophomores through seniors also had the opportunity to engage with local professionals and learn what it takes to succeed in different fields. Business leaders from organizations including the Atlanta Falcons, BGW Dental Group, Candler Real Estate, City of Gainesville Tourism, Georgia Power, Kubota, Milton Martin Toyota, Northeast Georgia Health System, Soulshine Farms, and Wilheit Packaging spoke with students about what employers value most in prospective employees, as well as the daily responsibilities and skills necessary for employment. These interactions encouraged students to explore their interests, consider their goals, and begin envisioning their own career paths.
While upperclassmen explored career opportunities, Lakeview’s freshmen participated in a team-building day at the Olympic Rowing Venue. Working together on the water through hands-on rowing exercises, students practiced communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills—fundamental elements of leadership and success in any field.
Through programs like Lakeview EDGE, Lakeview Academy continues to provide students with opportunities to connect classroom learning to real-world experiences—equipping them with the confidence, insight, and relationships needed for success in college and future careers.
