In light of recent events in our country highlighting social injustice, we would like to take this opportunity to start a thoughtful, open dialogue with you. Let us begin by emphasizing that we are unwavering in our commitment to our mission statement: Lakeview Academy is committed to excellence in the personal growth and academic development of the college-bound student through a partnership of school, family, and community. This partnership is the foundation on which our school will continue to build over its next fifty years. But first, let us share what is already in progress.
During our “Pathways to Success” strategic plan developed in 2014, increasing diversity was identified as a key step to maintaining a welcoming culture at Lakeview Academy. Specific efforts have been made to reflect this initiative at all levels, from the demographics of our student body, to our faculty, staff and administration, and finally to our Board of Trustees. Our faculty, staff, and students represent 36 countries. We are proud that our Board of Trustees is comprised equally of men and women, and that we will soon have two women of color serving on the Board. In addition, this year Lakeview Academy appointed its first female Head of School. We recognize that we have only begun our journey of addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion and that our work will be ongoing, but we are committed to ensuring that the faces of Lakeview Academy more closely represent those of our local, national, and global community.
In addition to the initiatives in Lakeview’s strategic plan, steps have been taken to strengthen the expectation set forth in the Student-Parent handbook, that each student treats all members of the community with respect. Recognizing that deeper education on the topics of harassment and bullying was needed, in 2019 Lakeview Academy engaged in a school-wide initiative to become an Anti-Bullying campus, and an updated anti-harassment/anti-bullying policy was implemented. Ongoing efforts to enforce these policies and institute a zero-tolerance approach to these issues will continue during the upcoming academic year, necessitating a thoughtful, individualized approach and deliberative process with each encounter. As well as the existing directives, the faculty and staff of Lakeview Academy will undergo implicit bias training prior to the start of this upcoming school year.
Finally, the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees has enlisted the continued help of the search firm, Carney, Sandoe & Associates to undergo Board governance training this fall. The Board will also participate in education on diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as implicit bias training. Progress needs to be meaningful and done with purpose and transparency if it is to succeed over the long term.
These actions are stepping-stones to building a more diverse, inclusive, and accepting culture at Lakeview Academy. We wanted to update you on what is already in place, and look forward to continuing this conversation with you as we begin our much-anticipated school year.
