Pressing the Reset Button

Decisions, decisions. Last Friday during Senior Lotto I had to make one of the more challenging decisions as Head of School: who danced the best and received the most support during the dance-off — the Senior boys or the Senior girls. The decision was akin to one of those life dilemmas such as whether to join Facebook or not, or whether it's appropriate to hope that the opposing team trips and falls during a World Cup penalty shoot-out with England. Both the boys and the girls had leapt around strutting their stuff during the dance-off and the crowd had gone nuts cheering both sides. Who to pick? I couldn't win and had just a few seconds to decide. I thought about my own children — three boys, three girls. That didn't help one iota. Then I thought about my AP Government & Politics class — four girls, three boys....eek... Finally, I thought about my dad — what would he do? ...
...He'd say, with his Irish lilt, "Ah, Kirsty, don't worry yourself, you're having fun either way." He was right. It didn't matter. Senior Lotto brought together the entire school — students, faculty, staff, and Senior parents for an hour of much-needed frivolity on Homecoming day. The sun was shining, our youngest students were cheering on the oldest ones, cotton balls were flying, cameras clicking, and balloons were popping left, right, and center. Who cares who won? It felt like we were pressing the reset button on the school year — October 1st, finally getting together as a family and letting our hair down. There will be many more opportunities like Friday, to enjoy the traditions of Lakeview which were modified or canceled in the past 18 months due to Covid-19. Saturday was the Homecoming Dance, this Friday is Grandparents & Special Friends Day. At the end of the month is Trip Week,  and preparations are underway for Candlelight. We plan to hold them all and honor the traditions that are so important while thinking about our shared vision for the future.

Starting this month, we will begin a strategic planning process. All constituents in the school will help create a plan of where we want Lakeview to be in five years and sketch out a roadmap to guide us there. Please participate in this process (more details forthcoming). It is important that we work as a family and a community to shape the future of the school, its programs, facilities, and culture. Whatever ends up in the plan, Senior Lotto is here to stay. That's one decision I won't have to make. Thank goodness.
