School Experiences Shape Who You Will Become

Last Tuesday evening Lakeview held an open house (albeit a modified COVID version) for prospective families. Even during these unprecedented times when everything seems to be on hold, parents are thinking ahead and making plans. Staff and faculty welcomed each new family, spent time on introductions and provided background on the school, its strengths, and the vision for the future. Rather than hear a sales pitch, and information that you can find on our website, we thought it was better for families to hear from real parents, and a student — those who had lived and breathed the Lakeview experience.

Our student representative, senior Kate Gottsman, shared a beautiful, authentic speech about her early days at school, the trials and tribulations of middle school, faculty who had impacted her life, and how her education had prepared her for life after Lakeview. While she was speaking, I was watching one of...
...Lakeview's youngest prospects – an 18-month-old, whose parents were forward planners, thinking about K3. The toddler was fiddling with his mother's sweater and doing what toddlers do: babbling, sitting upright for three seconds, then flopping in a heap on his mum's lap, babbling, then sitting up again, then wriggling down off the chair. I looked back at Kate, poised and speaking eloquently about her time at Lakeview. I couldn't help but wonder about the sixteen years that had passed since Kate was doing the same things as this toddler.

Sixteen years is a long time, and one's experiences at school are critical in shaping who you become. It goes beyond exams and grades. When I was at school, I hated history. It was boring. We spent what seemed like two centuries learning about the Long Barrows of Northern England. I remember thinking, so what? Why is this relevant? School is not just about rote memorization of facts and test taking. School allows you to take risks, to experiment, to be a team player, and to hone social skills. Even during this challenging time, with COVID restrictions in place, Lakeview is making school relevant, helping to shape its youngest through its oldest students into the adults that they will become. Look out for our alumni profiles, coming on the Lakeview website in the near future, and you'll see what I mean.
